Giants’ John Harbaugh sounds off on Cam Skattebo’s botched backflip

John Harbaugh — the Giants’ new, no-nonsense head coach — has made it clear what he thinks of Cam Skattebo’s recent botched backflip.

Here’s what Harbaugh said during an appearance on the podcast hosted by the Giants’ radio team of Bob Papa and Carl Banks:
“My reaction was: I haven’t talked to him yet. I’m going to talk to him, I’m sure. My reaction was this: Dude, at least stick it. I mean, land the thing if you’re going to do it, you know?. That was my first reaction.”
Harbaugh chuckled as he said this.
Then he continued: “But Skatt’s going to be ready to go. He’s been working super hard. He has really been training like crazy. And his mind is on camp. He’s healthy, he’s ready to roll, and I can’t wait to see him out there at practice.”
Harbaugh clearly was trying to downplay the situation, as Skattebo was widely ripped for his risky behavior. But you can bet Harbaugh will tell Skattebo in private to cut out this immature, pointless and risky stuff.
Earlier this offseason, Skattebo landed his trademark backflip celebration at teammate Brian Burns’ charity softball game. Then, over the weekend at Fanatics Fest in Manhattan, Skattebo fell while trying to do a backflip.
The Giants obviously need Skattebo — who is coming off a serious ankle injury — to remain healthy this season, as part of Harbaugh’s run-heavy approach.
Skattebo showed encouraging signs during the spring and is trending toward fully participating in practice at some point early in training camp. It would be a stunner if he is not ready for Week 1.
The Giants report to camp at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia next Tuesday, with their first practice coming a day later.
For his part — to no surprise — Skattebo brushed off his botched backflip and the criticism he has received for his off-field antics.
