On his Sept. 15 show as Memphis coach, Silverfield said he showed examples to his team of things they should avoid.
“The ‘not our standard’ is Georgia wide receiver arrested for driving 900 miles over the speed limit, right,” he said. “That’s a weekly occurrence. So, that’s one of those we’ll show.”
Silverfield was asked about those comments and his communication with Smart on Thursday July 23 in Tampa, Fla., at SEC Media Days.
“When it happened, listen, I’ve got the deep, most respect for Kirby Smart and the Georgia athletic department and everything that he’s about,” Silverfield said according to video posted by HawgSports. “Obviously, he’s done it at a high level so certainly a lot of respect for him. When it occurred, I reached out to him. He’s always been great to me. Even at my time at Memphis. He allowed us to come be a part of the camps. I think he knew that it was no ill will. Listen, I’ve got a lot or respect for him and what they’re doing.”
Georgia football players' reckless driving, speeding and racing arrests or citations have made headlines in recent years.
“At Memphis and still doing it here at Arkansas, we talk about things that are occurring in society that we can learn from,” Silverfield said Thursday. “I think the best thing for an 18-to-23-year old is to learn from other 18-to-23-year olds. We constantly show examples of things that we need to avoid. Have we certainly been perfect? Heck no.
Arkansas and Georgia open their SEC seasons in a Sept. 19 game in Fayetteville.
