Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Athletic, Victor Wembanyama revealed why he chose to take a $50 million pay cut to re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs.
Wembanyama suggested that the modern NBA salary cap rules can be a huge impediment to a team reaching their full potential, and he wants to make sure the Spurs are not held back by this factor.
“We have a good team, we had a very good playoff run, and we had a very good regular season. But what’s even better and greater is our potential.
“The reality of today’s NBA is that often, the potential of teams is not fulfilled because of money. I just want to make sure it’s never our case.”
Wembanyama is referencing the current salary cap rules under the most recent collective bargaining agreement that puts severe penalties on teams exceeding the first and second apron thresholds beyond the maximum salary limit.

For a team as young as the San Antonio Spurs to reach the NBA Finals in their very first playoff run together is absolutely phenomenal.
Undoubtedly, the lion’s share of the credit must go to the Spurs’ young trio of Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper.
The three stars are going to be the trio that the Spurs build their team around for years to come, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them lead the team to multiple NBA championships together.
All three players were top-five picks in their respective draft classes for a reason, and they have gelled very well together despite being so young.
As time goes on and they develop further, the Spurs could boast the most dominant trio in the NBA since Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson on the Golden State Warriors.
