Unless Smith decides to play this season, the Vikings have an opening at safety for the first time in 15 years. That makes the position one of Minnesota’s most important defensive storylines entering training camp, even if the quarterback competition and offensive line questions generate more attention, Kevin Seifert of ESPN reports.
Smith’s absence would represent more than the loss of a longtime starter. He has been one of the franchise’s defining defensive players, providing communication, disguise, physicality, and leadership on the back end. Replacing that kind of presence is not as simple as naming a new starter.
Minnesota’s internal options begin with Jay Ward and Theo Jackson. The two veterans combined for 14 starts last season, giving defensive coordinator Brian Flores players with game experience and familiarity in his system. That matters in a defense built around movement, pressure looks, late rotations, and unusual personnel groupings.
Rookie Jakobe Thomas adds another layer to the competition. The third-round pick brings size and versatility after arriving from Miami, and his development could shape how quickly the Vikings feel comfortable expanding his role. He does not need to become Smith immediately, but Minnesota needs to know whether he can handle enough responsibility to become part of the answer.
Joshua Metellus remains the most flexible piece in the secondary. Flores has long valued his ability to align in multiple spots, and that versatility could become even more important if no traditional safety clearly wins the job. It is not impossible that Minnesota leans into its defensive creativity and uses Metellus as the lone true safety in certain packages.
That would be a very different look from the Smith era.
The Vikings do not need to replicate Smith’s career. They need a functional plan that keeps Flores’ defense unpredictable and organized. Training camp will begin revealing whether that answer is already on the roster.
