Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has revealed why he was so happy to see Barcelona star Ferran Torres score the winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina.
Torres has come in for plenty of criticism throughout his career but wrote his name into the history books with the only goal of the game as Spain picked up a second ever title.

De la Fuente says Torres fully deserved his moment and that he loved seeing him prove his worth in the biggest game of them all.
“I was really happy when Ferran scored the winning goal in the final, because I’m a guy who tries to be fair. And when I see injustices and unfounded, exaggerated criticism, especially when it’s malicious, well, we’ve seen that life gives you the chance to redeem yourself, to prove yourself,” he told AS.
“Ferran has spectacular stats with the national team, but it’s exactly the same at his club. His goals-per-game ratio is fantastic. He reminds me a bit of Álvaro Morata. I’m glad that, faced with injustice, people are able to say, ‘Here I am.’ And in these cases, he’s earned it, because someone else probably would have given up and let it go.”
Torres has 25 goals for Spain so far in his career, ensuring he’s already inside the Top 10 in the list of all-time scorers for La Roja.
