At this point in the offseason, it's rare for an NFL team to be able to add an impact defender. But on Monday, one hit the trade market.
As training camps get underway, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has reportedly requested a trade as he seeks an extension.
The 31-year-old has spent his entire career with the Buccaneers so far, but if the team grants his request, the two-time Pro Bowler could be a significant preseason addition for a playoff contender.
Here's a look at five potential fits for Vea on the trade market if the Buccaneers choose to move him.

Vita Vea landing spots
49ers
According to Ted Nguyen, Vea's trade request came with the preference that he "wants to go to a California team or the Raiders." Among NFC West teams, the Rams don't make much sense, already cashing trade chips for Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie this offseason while Aaron Donald is contemplating un-retiring — but the 49ers could be calling the Buccaneers.
San Francisco may not be an ideal schematic fit for Vea, but the 49ers are also a franchise that typically capitalizes on situations like his. Currently, San Francisco has Osa Odighizuwa, Alfred Collins and C.J. West, but for a team that often deals with injuries, adding Vea could also provide some insurance.
After making a playoff trip in a loaded NFC West last season, the 49ers pairing Vea with Nick Bosa on the defensive line would be a terrifying thought for opposing offensive lines.
Raiders
Earlier this offseason, the Raiders agreed to trade their best defensive player, Maxx Crosby, then wound up bringing him back due to a failed physical. Could they now try to pair Crosby with another standout defender on the trade market?
Las Vegas is a franchise that's still very much in a rebuilding phase, entering Year 1 with Klint Kubiak as head coach and Fernando Mendoza at quarterback. The Raiders need as much talent as they can get, and if they believe they can contend for a playoff spot within a year or two, Vea could be a welcomed addition.
It wouldn't be wise for Las Vegas to part ways with any significant draft capital, but if it doesn't cost too much, Vea could slot in next to Crosby and help shore up a Raiders defense that ranked among the middle of the pack in 2025. Vea also reportedly has interest in joining the franchise, which only helps.
Giants
This has been an offseason of changes for the Giants, and with John Harbaugh at the helm, expectations are higher. A last-place finish in the NFC East would be a disappointment in 2026, as New York is hoping that with some talented young defenders and an emerging quarterback in Jaxson Dart, it can contend for a playoff spot. Vea is the kind of player who can help that cause on and off the field.
The Giants traded star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence earlier this offseason but never actually replaced him, using the No. 10 pick from Cincinnati on an offensive tackle. Vea wouldn't be a Lawrence-level replacement, but he'd undoubtedly be a reliable starter on the defensive line next to Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and others.
In 2025, New York had one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL. Harbaugh's presence and some steps forward from young players should help, but Vea could also be a terrific veteran fit to replace Lawrence.
Bears
In the Bears' resurgent 2025 season, one of their few weaknesses was their interior defensive line. Chicago allowed 134.5 rushing yards per game, which ranked 27th in the NFL. Vea isn't going to fix it all, but he is the kind of player who could significantly help in that area.
Despite the need for a weapon on the defensive line, the Bears also never addressed the position this offseason, bringing in safety Coby Bryant, linebacker Devin Bush and rookie safety Dillon Thieneman.
Vea could be the long-awaited addition to the defensive line that helps the Bears' defense improve again in 2026.
Chargers
The Chargers don't have a glaring need on their interior defensive line. But if they're going to finally make a deep playoff run in the Justin Herbert era, perhaps they fortify their defense with a Pro Bowl nose tackle who has a Super Bowl ring.
Los Angeles would check Vea's reported preference of joining a California team, and he'd also make for a terrific interior defensive line alongside Teair Tart, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Jamaree Caldwell. With those four players, plus Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu, the Chargers could roll out an elite pass rush every week.
Vea would be a luxury for the Chargers, but if the price isn't high for a 31-year-old on the tail end of his prime, it's an all-in move L.A. could make.

Will the Buccaneers trade Vita Vea?
Vea may have requested a trade, but in the modern NFL, that can often be a leverage play with hopes of landing a desired extension. Sometimes, trade requests lead to deals — other times, they put pressure on the team to hammer out a contract.
Interestingly, however, the Buccaneers may be prioritizing a more high-profile extension situation: quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is entering the final year of his contract in Tampa Bay and would become a free agent after this season. With the success Mayfield has found with the franchise, priority No. 1 may be finding the right number for the quarterback, which may have consequences for Vea's situation.
If the Buccaneers don't have any plans to extend Vea, it'd make sense to deal him and recoup some value before he'd walk in free agency.
