Dodgers Make Edwin Diaz Return Official, DFA Charlie Barnes

The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated closer Edwin Diaz from the injured list Wednesday, designating Charlie Barnes for assignment in a corresponding move.

Diaz, who the Dodgers signed to a three-year, $69 million deal in the offseason, has been out since April after undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow. He had a strong five outings to kick off his season, allowing just one earned run through five innings pitched, but struggled through his last couple of appearances before landing on the IL.
In the first of the two, Diaz allowed three runs in one inning pitched against the Texas Rangers, blowing a race but ultimately earning a win in the outing. The following game, though, Diaz didn’t record an out before allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Diaz made seven appearances on his rehab assignment, splitting time between the Arizona Complex League, Single-A and Triple-A. He held opponents scoreless in the ACL and Single-A, though allowed two earned runs through 1.2 innings pitched with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Dodgers will hope Diaz can help out their bullpen, which has struggled a fair bit in July. Dodgers relievers have a collective 4.91 ERA since the beginning of the month, which ranks in the bottom 10 of MLB during that stretch.
Additionally, their ERA this month is noticeably worse than what it has been for the whole of the season: 3.91.
Diaz is sure to provide some relief to the Dodgers’ bullpen, and will aim to get his shot and make difference during their game against the Seattle Mariners at 7:10 p.m. PT Wednesday.

Barnes had been with the Dodgers since May, as they claimed him off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Barnes began his time with the Dodgers in Triple-A, but has bounced between MLB and the minors several times since.
He has made four appearances for the Dodgers since his arrival, pitching 10 innings and allowing seven earned runs for a 6.30 ERA. He has five strikeouts during that stretch as well.
Barnes’ last appearance came July 26 against the New York Mets, when Barnes threw one inning of relief and struck out two batters in a blowout loss.
The right-hander will be on waivers for the time being, with an eventual move—be it clearing waivers and going to Triple-A or being taken by another team—looming.
