Surprise MLB team could steal Tarik Skubal from the Dodgers at the trade deadline

All we need to do is talk about the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just bring up the organization, and the ire generated across the MLB universe is quite loud. When we talk about the Dodgers and acquiring baseball’s biggest Trade Deadline prize in Tarik Skubal, the volume only gets that much louder.

After Skubal seemingly made his last start in a Detroit Tigers uniform on Wednesday, a trade is seeming more and more likely. We know that the Tigers aren’t going to re-sign Skubal this winter, so even though it might not be an ideal situation, a trade appears to be the logical solution and path. There is one team in particular who could make a deal with the Tigers, and it’s not the Dodgers.

With a player like Skubal, though, the market is going to be limited. He’s not going to come cheap, in both prospects and dollars, and while the move is being made just for the next three months (including the postseason), there’s bound to be the storyline of locking Skubal up with a long-term contract.

Do the Dodgers Need Skubal?

Whether or not the Dodgers truly “need” Skubal doesn’t even apply here. Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani are still unknowns at this point given their health issues, and there’s not a rotation in the world that Skubal wouldn’t make better. The Dodgers also have the prospect capital to make the deal without needing Skubal to commit to a long-term contract.

At the end of the day, flags fly forever. I’m not about to say that trading for Skubal equates to a World Series victory for the Dodgers, but it’s close.

However, we also shouldn’t assume that it’s a slam dunk that the left-hander will be taking his talents to Los Angeles.

The Atlanta Braves shouldn’t be forgotten about

By no means should the Braves not be thought of as a World Series contender, but they are behind the Dodgers as they fight for their lives in the National League with the Philadelphia Phillies. Trading for Skubal would put them over the top and, along with Chris Sale, give the Braves a top-of-the-rotation duo no one would want to face.

Atlanta also has the prospect capital to make this deal work, and they are one of the few teams that can both re-sign him and say that Skubal is the missing piece to a championship. At the very least, the Dodgers have some real competition here.
