As the Texas Tech Raiders head into the 2026 CFB season, their offense will see QB Brendan Sorsby missing from action. The signal-caller, despite having won an injunction against the NCAA over his CFB eligibility amidst gambling ties, parted ways with the Texas-based program on June 15th.

As Sorsby intended to partake in the 2026 NFL draft, the league decided against holding one. While a lot of people expected a litigious pushback from Sorsby’s camp, the quarterback chose not to go down that route onJune 30.

Just 31 days after Brendan passed on potential legal charges against the NFL and announced his preparation for the 2027 NFL draft, Texas Tech’s head coach Joey McGuire shared that he received advice from legendary Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, who was in a similar predicament.

“You know, he (Bob Stoops) gave me some good advice about a month ago because he went through something similar. He lost his quarterback to a situation right before fall camp started, and they still won the Big 12. They went 7-1 that year in the Big 12,” McGuire stated in a Texas Tech interview on YouTube (20:15).

He elaborated (20:30):

“And so, you know, it’s just one of those deals. You’ve got to learn from everybody that you can, that you respect, and our team will be ready to go.”

Bob Stoops, who guided the Oklahoma Sooners to a national championship in 2000, has also helped the program clinch the Big 12 title 10 times.

Why Was There No 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft?

As Brendan Sorsby put in his name for the 2026 NFL draft three business days before its deadline, the NFL wrote a letter to the quarterback on June 23, informing him that there is no supplemental draft this year.

The letter, signed by the NFL’s general counsel, Lawrence P. Fezerani Jr., revealed that the league has not conducted such drafts in years and that no other players were participating.

The letter also reiterated Brendan’s gambling past, supposed NCAA violations, and breach of the state criminal law.
