21-year-old allegedly killed by stepfather while protecting mother

A 42-year-old stepfather has been arrested after his 21-year-old stepson was allegedly stabbed to death while trying to protect his mother during a domestic dispute in Hertzogville, Free State.

The man is expected to appear in the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder following the incident on Saturday evening, 1 August.

Stepson allegedly intervened during domestic dispute

According to police, officers responded to a reported stabbing at Malebogo Location at about 19:30.

On arrival, they were directed to the back of a shack, where they found a 21-year-old man lying unresponsive in a pool of blood.

Emergency Medical Services declared the victim dead at the scene.

Police identified him as Mothusimang Moseme (21). He had sustained a stab wound to the left side of his neck.

Police outline alleged attack

Preliminary information indicates the suspect was allegedly assaulting the deceased’s mother inside the shack.

Police said Moseme intervened in an attempt to stop the assault.

During the confrontation, the stepfather allegedly stabbed the young man in the neck.

The victim reportedly tried to flee but collapsed behind the shack, where he later died.

The deceased’s mother also sustained head injuries during the incident.

Suspect faces murder charge

Police recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack and seized it as evidence.

The 42-year-old suspect was arrested and is expected to appear before the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Police investigations are continuing.
