KZN records highest voter registration activity during final IEC registration weekend

KwaZulu-Natal has recorded the highest level of voter registration activity, with 53 958 transactions processed as of 12:00 on Sunday, 2 August, during the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) final voter registration weekend.
South Africa will hold its local government elections on 4 November, with 1 and 2 August marking the final opportunity for eligible citizens to register to vote or update their registration details.

According to the IEC, it had interacted with more than 238 000 citizens through voting stations and its online voter registration portal by midday on Sunday.
The Commission said the majority of transactions involved voters updating their registration details to ensure they are correctly registered ahead of the local government elections. New voter registrations accounted for 13.4% of all transactions, with 31 892 people registering for the first time.

The IEC said most transactions (217 922) were processed at voting stations across the country, while its free online voter registration portal recorded 20 078 transactions, offering eligible voters an additional convenient way to register or update their information.
Preliminary figures show that KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of voter transactions (53 958), followed by the Eastern Cape (45 375) and Gauteng (40 425). The IEC said this is consistent with historical trends and reflects the population density of these provinces.
Other provinces also recorded strong voter activity, including Limpopo (28,721), the Western Cape (19 057), Mpumalanga (16 662), North West (15 106), the Free State (12 686), and the Northern Cape (6 010), as citizens responded to the Commission’s call to register and update their details before the close of the voting station-based registration period.
Voting stations will remain open until 17:00 on Sunday.
