The Arizona Cardinals made waves this offseason by selecting running back Jeremiyah Love third overall in the 2026 NFL draft. He was the highest-drafted back since Saquon Barkley went second overall in 2018.
Being drafted so high has brought high expectations.

How good can Love be as a rookie?
Former start running back Adrian Peterson, who was drafted seventh overall in 2007 and had a 15-year career that will likely put him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, believes Love can be as good as he was as a rookie.
Peterson was Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2007, rushing for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns on 238 carries, and with 19 receptions for 268 yards and a score, he had a total of 1,609 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns.
“I could see him doing that,” said Peterson in an interview with Rotogrinders. “Watching him in college, he’s an incredible talent. Really good vision. Agile. I feel like he has the potential to do that."
But Peterson doesn't guarantee it. It is a belief in Love's talent.
“The one thing that I can’t vouch for is, what type of work are these guys putting in? I know all about it because that’s what my career was based on — getting out what you put in," he said. "From the looks of it, what he was able to do in college, he definitely has the ability to make an impact immediately. I’m just hoping that he has done, and is continuing to do, the things he needs to do to make that splash that he wants.”
Peterson would lead the NFL in rushing three times with the Vikings. He was the 2012 MVP, he made seven Pro Bowls and he was a four-time first-team All-Pro.
He eventually played for the Cardinals in 2017, getting traded from the New Orleans Saints. He rushed for 448 yards in six games before suffering a season-ending neck injury. He had a 15-year career and is eligible for the Hall of Fame next year.
Love will have to really stand out, as the Cardinals also have Tyler Allgeier at running back, whom they signed in free agency. Chances are that Love will be very good but he won't have the number of touches that Peterson did in his rookie season.
It will be fun to watch, for sure.
