The Lions signed former Carolina Panthers running back Raheem Blackshear after a tryout on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kylin James and former Michigan running back Hassan Haskins also took part in the workout.
Blackshear had 52 carries for 203 yards in three seasons with the Panthers from 2022-24, when he doubled as the team's primary kick returner. He also has spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets in his NFL career.
The Lions are shorthanded at running back after Vaki broke his nose in practice Monday, Aug. 3. Lions coach Dan Campbell called it a "freak" accident, when Vaki took a hand to the face while being tackled during the Lions' first padded practice of training camp.
Gibbs has not participated in any of the team's six workouts while he awaits a new contract that should make him the highest- or second highest-paid running back in the NFL.
The Lions waived receivers Lawrence Keys with an injury designation to make room on their roster for Blackshear.
