Aston Villa and Newcastle are tracking Jorge Salinas

Aston Villa and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas, according to the Daily Mail.

The Villa and Magpies target is a left-back by trade but can also deputise at centre-half when needed.

He caught the eye of clubs like the Villains and Newcastle with seven assists in 33 appearances in the Spanish second division. He also helped keep seven clean sheets.

Salinas won 50 percent of his aerial and 52% of his ground duels, earmarking himself as one of the finest young defensive talents around.

Villa could use a left-back of his profile as they are about to lose Lucas Digne, who is on his way back to France.

The Birmingham-based club have been linked to Matteo Ruggeri and have reportedly agreed a £24 million deal for his services.

However, he has not given the move the green light, and the Europa League champions might have to look elsewhere for reinforcement.

Newcastle will also appreciate Salinas’ services. Dan Burn is advancing in age and not the most mobile left-back when called upon.

Meanwhile, first-choice left-back Lewis Hall has had a couple of injury setbacks and could leave St James’ Park soon with several top Premier League sides eyeing him.

The Toons need another left-back to provide serious competition for Hall and potentially take the reins.

Interestingly, Barcelona and Manchester United scouts have watched the highly-rated Salinas, too.

The report claims that some clubs might view him as a player for the future while others are considering a bid this month.

It remains unclear whether Villa or Newcastle will pull the trigger for the Spanish youth international defender this summer, but it might not be the worst decision.

He is an awesome talent who could develop into a consistent performer, perhaps on Tyneside or at Villa Park.
