Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell lead Indiana Fever through mess of a game to win vs Chicago Sky

CHICAGO — The Indiana Fever took down the Chicago Sky 90-86 in a ferocious game Saturday afternoon at the United Center.

The Fever (20-12) led by double digits at times during the game, and as many as 17, but allowed Chicago to get back into it at the end of the game. The Sky got within one possession with 17 seconds left, but Caitlin Clark (after missing two free-throws in crunch time on Thursday night) went 1-of-2 at the line to make it a two-possession game and ultimately seal a Fever win.

Clark finished with 26 points and 11 assists, while Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 27 points. Aliyah Boston added on 13 points and 11 rebounds.

What I disliked in the Indiana Fever's win vs Chicago Sky

• Hard fouls:DiJonai Carrington was ejected just eight minutes into the game after an irrefutable hard foul on Sophie Cunningham as Cunningham was going up for a layup. Carrington hit Cunningham's face with her left arm, sending Cunningham flying to the ground. Cunningham quickly popped up and confronted Carrington, but she was quickly pulled away by Makayla Timpson and Fever security. After a short review from officials, they determined it was a flagrant 2, and Carrington — who had eight points in three minutes — was disqualified for the rest of the game for the unnecessary and dangerous foul.
• Caitlin Clark's eighth technical foul: What the Fever were fearing has finally happened: Clark picked up her eighth technical foul, and she will be suspended for the Fever's next game (Tuesday against New York) unless Indiana can successfully appeal the technical or the league rescinds it upon its review. Clark picked up the tech when she was bumped off the baseline and made some contact with official Genesis Perrymond, forcing Perrymond back a couple steps. Clark was incredulous after Perrymond called the tech, putting her hands up and saying "for what," and Fever coach Stephanie White was irate enough that she picked up another tech from official Agon Abazi.

What the Indiana Fever's win vs Chicago Sky means

Indiana needed this win, if only for mental fortitude, after two straight close losses to Minnesota and Las Vegas this week. Controlling the game and working through those late-fourth quarter mistakes (including a shot clock violation with a minute left) surely will give the Fever confidence heading into a double stretch of games next week.
