The Minnesota Vikings are starting quarterback Kyler Murray for the 2026 season, and that leaves J.J. McCarthy at the sidelines.

The news came on Tuesday, with ESPN's Adam Schefter sharing that the team has made their final decision. It's not a huge surprise, since Murray probably wouldn't have come to Minnesota if he thought that he would just be a backup. But, it's still shaking up the Vikings' camp today.
With Murray as QB1, there's discussion about whether McCarthy will be a Viking for much longer.
In a piece for FanSided, Mark Powell looks at realistic trade destinations for McCarthy. "This should open the floodgates for possible trade rumors involving the Michigan product who has not panned out as the Vikings had hoped," he says in the article.

He sees the Jets as a landing spot, stating that even though veteran Geno Smith is likely to start Week 1, if they want to go the developmental route, or add some assurance if Smith goes down or doesn't have a good start to the season, McCarthy is it. His trade package sees the Vikings getting a 2027 fourth-round pick.
"Right now, the Jets don't have their true quarterback of the future on the roster," he states in the piece. "Adding McCarthy will not stop New York from selecting a quarterback in the coveted 2027 class, but it does give them options and could prevent the Jets from making a familiar mistake, and that's throwing a young quarterback into the fire."
It's not a terrible idea. But, the question is whether Aaron Glenn and the Jets are really in the mindset to make a big move like this late in the offseason.
