It isn’t harsh to say that Calvin Phillips’ time at Manchester City has not been a success. After signing for City from Leeds United in the summer of 2022, the England international only made 32 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side. He spent the second half of the 2023-24 season out on loan at West Ham. Following that move, Phillips moved to Ipswich Town on loan for the 2024-25 season. From there, Phillips made one appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side last season before going out on loan to Sheffield United. He made three appearances for the Blades before a knee injury ended his season.
Kalvin Phillips has now gone out on loan to Sheffield United for the 2026-27 season. All you can hope for at this point is that Phillips can play regularly and enjoy himself at Sheffield United.

Manchester City have confirmed that Kalvin Phillips will spend the 2026-27 season out on loan at Sheffield United. There was little to no chance of Phillips resurrecting his City career under Enzo Maresca.
Sheffield United have confirmed the loan signing of Kalvin Phillips on their official website. Speaking after his loan move to Sheffield United was confirmed, Phillips revealed that he has returned to the club he wanted to play for. He explained: “This was the move I wanted. My time was spoiled by my last game and the injury after that so I’m here to put that right.”
“The squad is similar to what it was last year, I’m happy to see everyone and I’m looking forward to coming back fighting fit. It is a good feeling to walk back through the doors in Shirecliffe, I see that the pre-season has been tough and the lads have come out flying so I’m happy to start training and get involved.”
Kalvin Phillips’ career with Manchester City has been over for some time, so hopefully he can show something at Sheffield United.
At this point, all you can hope for with Kalvin Phillips is that he can enjoy himself at Sheffield United and get back on the pitch on a regular basis. Phillips’ time at Manchester City has been a disaster. When City signed him from Leeds United, it was hoped that he’d provide competent cover for Rodri. That never occurred and Phillips never got off the ground as a City player. His series of loan spells also haven’t worked out. Phillips has suffered a host of injury issues and his form has deserted him. Due to these factors, plus Phillips’ large wage, Manchester City have not been able to sell Phillips in what would have been the ideal move for him and the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders.
Kalvin Phillips now has the opportunity to become an important player for Sheffield United this season. His experience should aid the Blades cause in the Championship this season. Also, if Phillips can stay fit he might find a permanent move next summer rather than yet another loan move. For him, and Manchester City, that is the best both parties can hope for.
