Consider this a heads-up if you need to renew your vehicle licence in 2026. As excellent as it has become, government-run NATIS was never the only door into the system. In fact, a small but vibrant industry has built itself around annual disc renewal in South Africa.

Some providers have gone quiet since NATIS upped its game and improved turnaround time. Meanwhile, others have changed hands or vanished entirely over the last year or so. Here we’ll take a look at all the third-party providers when you renew your vehicle licence in 2026.

RENEW YOUR VEHICLE LICENCE IN 2026

Critically, each of these third-party players is bolting its own service fee on top of the provincial tariff government already charges you. Some are cheap. Some are expensive for reasons nobody quite explains. Nevertheless, if NATIS doesn’t float your boat for whatever reason, here’s the current lay of the land, category by category:

BANKING APPS

Five major banks don’t just offer Smart ID Cards through Home Affairs, they still allow you to renew your vehicle licence in 2026. They feed into the same NATIS backend just like everyone else. However, pricing is where they differ:

  • FNB has spent two years as the cheapest banking app option. Thanks to a running promotion, combined with the standard R72 admin charge, FNB renewals sit at R141 over and above the cost of your actual licence renewal and R91 for courier delivery. So, R232 total.
  • Capitec charges a service fee on top of the licence amount, R122 admin plus R99 delivery. Combined this adds up to R221. Disc delivery takes three to five business days.
  • ABSA and Standard Bank both allow you to renew your vehicle licence in 2026. Of course, you need to bank with these particular instiutions and have the latest app version, too. Neither publishes a clear, current service fee, so confirmed in-app pricing beforehand.

SUPERMARKETS & RETAILERS

You’ve long been able to renew your vehicle licence in 2026 while grocery shopping. Before digital commerce became so convenient, retailers pitched this as a value-add convenience over queuing at a driver licence centre and faffing with multi-coloured forms:

  • Shoprite, Checkers and USave run the service through its Money Market counters in roughly 1 350 stores nationwide. The standard admin fee is R225, though the group has periodically discounted it to R185 during high-volume renewal periods.
  • Spar offers renewals too, but only at select stores, and only in person, no couriering. If you wish to renew your vehicle licence in 2026, simply submit the renewal in-branch and collect the finished disc from the same store once it’s ready, at a quoted fee of R199.
  • Pick n Pay launched its disc renewal service, priced it at R250 plus a R99 courier fee – R349 total. This made it the most expensive option on the market and it suspended the service way back in 2023.

SOUTH AFRICAN POST OFFICE

Yup, the South African Post Office (SAPO) is still around, and it still processes vehicle licence renewals at its 610 branches nationwide. Simply take your renewal notice or ID, pay at the counter, and collect when ready. Ironically, no couriering. And no additional fee either. Previously, there was a digital renewal service, which carried a R75 service fee. This was pitched as ‘SAPO in my Pocket’ but it was quietly discontinued in late 2024.

WHATSAPP & OTHER APP-BASED SERVICES

  • When it comes to renew your vehicle licence in 2026, don’t discount chat-based renewal companies. ChatBack runs licence renewals entirely over WhatsApp. Send your registration number, tare weight and expiry date, get a quote back, pay via a secure link, then submit your ID and proof of address. They’re a little more expensive for the convenience, with a service fee starting from R300 on top of the provincial licence amount. However, they only operates in Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and North West only, not nationwide.
  • Disky is another offering similar WhatsApp-based renewal. Pricing is R169 admin fee, plus R70 delivery, so R239 in total.

THE ONE THAT DISAPPEARED

Some are worth mentioning precisely because they no longer exist. PayCity was, for years the cheapest renewal services on the market. However, it discontinued renewals in mid-2024.
