NFR Accelerates Safety Modernisation and Operational Transformation through Advanced Signalling & Telecommunication Initiatives

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is advancing the modernisation of its railway network through a series of technology driven Signalling & Telecommunication initiatives, reinforcing safety, operational resilience, communication reliability and passenger-centric services. During the period from 1st January to 31st July 2026, several significant S&T interventions have been commissioned across NFR.
A major thrust has been placed on strengthening the safety architecture and signalling ecosystem. Electronic Interlocking has been commissioned at 9 stations, while 40 Level Crossing Gates have been interlocked and 39 Sliding Booms commissioned, enhancing protection at critical interfaces and supporting smoother train operations. Further, 29.73 Route Kilometres of Automatic Block Signalling has been commissioned in the Aluabari Road–Gaisal–Panjipara section, augmenting signalling capabilities and operational efficiency.

NFR has simultaneously expanded its technology-enabled surveillance framework with CCTV systems commissioned at 74 stations and 24 Level Crossing Gates. This strengthens real-time monitoring capabilities and contributes to a more robust safety and security environment across the railway network.
In a significant step towards operational digitalisation, the VoIP-based Train Control Communication System (TCCS) has been installed and commissioned in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions, facilitating reliable communication and supporting efficient train control operations.
Further reinforcing the digital backbone of passenger services, RCIL Passenger Reservation System circuits at 10 Tier-I locations have been upgraded from 2 Mbps to 10 Mbps, substantially enhancing network capacity and reliability. Integrated Passenger Information Systems have also been provided at 8 stations, strengthening the availability of timely passenger information.
Through these technologies led interventions, N.F. Railway is steadily transitioning towards a more resilient, intelligent and efficient railway ecosystem where advanced signalling, digital communication, surveillance and passenger information systems converge to strengthen safety and elevate the overall quality of railway operations and passenger services.
