Nine-hour power outage to hit parts of Durban

Residents in parts of Durban’s Outer West are being warned of a planned electricity outage on Monday, 17 August, as the eThekwini Electricity and Energy Directorate carries out work at the Waterfall Substation.

The planned interruption will take place from 8:00 to 17:00 and is required to allow technicians to test and commission the transformer protection scheme at the substation.
Several areas will be affected by the outage.
Areas affected by the planned power outage
The following areas could experience an interruption to their electricity supply:
- Berrell
- Congo
- Crestholme
- Crestview
- Lower Molweni
- Luthele
- Maromeni
- Nkangala
- Nogxaza
- Tin Town
- Umngeni
- Waterfall
Residents in these areas are urged to plan and make the necessary arrangements before the electricity is switched off.
The municipality has advised that customers who have not been switched off by 8.30 can assume that they will not be affected by the planned outage.
Residents urged to take precautions
As with any power outage, residents are advised to take precautions and ensure that appliances are switched off before the outage begins.
The public is also warned to treat all electrical installations as live throughout the outage.
The planned work is necessary to test and commission the transformer protection scheme at Waterfall Substation, which forms part of the municipality’s electricity infrastructure.
The planned outage is scheduled to run until 17:00 on Monday, 17 August.
