Encouraging injury update for Steelers corners Ramsey, Porter

The Pittsburgh Steelers are navigating training camp with a heavily re-tooled secondary, but relief may soon be on the horizon. Head coach Mike McCarthy offered an encouraging update regarding two of the team's top cornerbacks, Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr., who both opened camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Addressing the media, reporter Nick Farabaugh captured the head coach’s reassuring tone in a post he shared on X.

"Mike McCarthy says Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr. continue to make progress in their return from the PUP. Didn't see to be much long-term concern with either," noted Farabaugh from McCarthy’s press conference.

Both defensive backs have been sidelined since the start of camp in late July. Ramsey, the veteran three-time All-Pro acquired to anchor the secondary, has been working through a minor knee issue sustained during minicamp workouts. Meanwhile, Porter, the team's rising fourth-year perimeter corner, was placed on the PUP list after experiencing a back flare-up during a conditioning session.

While extended absences early in camp often spark concern among fanbases and analysts, McCarthy’s comments suggest the coaching staff is taking a deliberate, precautionary approach with two of their most vital defensive contributors.

Neither injury appears poised to derail their readiness for the regular season, and both players have been spotted completing light individual conditioning work on the sidelines as they gear up for full activation.

Having Ramsey and Porter back on the field will be essential for Pittsburgh's defensive structure. Ramsey’s versatile playmaking alongside Porter’s physical press coverage gives the Steelers one of the league's most formidable cornerback duos on paper.

As the regular season approaches, the coaches will continue monitoring their reps carefully. However, with McCarthy publicly downplaying any long-term panic, Steelers fans can take a breath knowing that two key defensive pillars are trending steadily in the right direction.
