The youngster is a Barnsley native who holds English citizenship, but has thus far represented the Republic of Ireland at the international level, earning nine caps at the U19 level and seven with the U21s.

Devaney is also considered one of the most exciting young academy products at Carrington thanks to his battling style, but he has now reached a certain age where playing time is essential for his development.

And since he’s unlikely to feature for Michael Carrick’s team this season, he is set to leave the club on a temporary basis.

Jacob Devaney in talks with Hibernian

This summer, Devaney was involved in some of Man Utd’s pre-season fixtures, particularly the first two against Wrexham and Rosenborg. But with the first-team regulars returning to the base, and new signings arriving at Carrington, the youngster won’t find any space at Carrick’s court.

Last season, Devaney was the captain of Man Utd’s U21 side during the first half of the campaign, then moved to St. Mirren on loan for the second half of the season.

Therefore, the midfielder has already acquainted himself with Scottish football, as he could be about to embark on another experience up north.

According to BBC journalist Simon Stone, Man Utd and Hibernian are negotiating a loan move for the teenager.

Could Devaney earn a place at Man Utd in the future?

Last season, Devaney impressed at St. Mirren, hence why he earned interest from Hibernian, who finished last season in the Top 5 of the Scottish Premiership.

Moreover, the teenager received plaudits from Carrick, who praised him for his ‘vocal and commanding’ presence.

After making an impression on the gaffer, a future with the first team cannot be ruled out, especially if he succeeds at Hibernian.

That being said, several players of his age group are ahead of him in the pecking order, namely Jack and Tyler Fletcher, and Jim Thwaites, not to mention that United have just revamped their midfield department, significantly lowering the average bill.

So if Carlos Baleba ends up joining the crew, three of Man Utd’s four main central midfielders will be under the age of 23, with Youri Tielemans (29) being the only experienced profile.

Therefore, Devaney’s chances of seizing a prominent role at the club remain somewhat modest, despite his talent.
