Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are back for another go. This is his final season in the NFL, so expectations are obviously high and hopes are up.
If Rodgers is ever going to win another Super Bowl, this is really the year to do it. One reason is because he's back with Mike McCarthy, his old coach from Green Bay, with whom he's won a championship. So, it could very well happen. It's not a pipe dream anymore.
But, the Steelers aren't taking any chances. Right now, they have four quarterbacks locked into their roster, which is massive. So, what will happen when they put out their 53-man roster?
Steelers could keep all four quarterbacks
In a roster projection released on Monday, Todd Archer of ESPN has the Steelers keeping every single one of their quarterbacks: Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar. Crazy, right?
In the piece, he notes that the "toughest decision facing the Steelers comes behind Aaron Rodgers and the deliberation between keeping two or three backup quarterbacks."
He adds, "Will Howard and Drew Allar are young and unproven, but their preseason performances show they're progressing well under coach Mike McCarthy and could handle filling in for Rodgers in case of emergency."
Archer's projection is that even though McCarthy has never had four quarterbacks on his initial 53-man roster, he will this season. Why? He says the "decision is necessary because the gulf between Rudolph and the pair of young quarterbacks is sizable."
So, it makes sense to keep Rudolph, Allar and Howard, giving the Steelers a massive insurance policy.
