Woman arrested at airport with R300 000 worth of suspected cocaine hidden in doll head

Police have arrested a 36‑year‑old woman after 232 stones of suspected crack cocaine, valued at R300 000, were discovered hidden inside a hairdresser’s doll head during a security scan.

The woman was handcuffed at Bram Fischer International Airport in the Free State on Saturday.

Hairdresser doll

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane said Visible Policing Unit members responsible for crime prevention at the airport were alerted about the drugs by an Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) supervisor.

“The members responded to the call and, on arrival, were pointed to a hairdresser doll head belonging to the 36-year-old female who was about to depart on a flight to Johannesburg. Local Criminal Records Centre experts were also summoned to process the scene.

“The hairdresser doll head was opened, and the material stuffed inside the doll with foam was removed. 232 Stones suspected to be rock drug or crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of R300 000, were counted in the presence of the suspect,” Covane said,

Body search

The police conducted a further body search, and R93 220 in cash was found in the suspect’s possession.

Covane said the 36-year-old suspect was immediately placed under arrest.

“A case docket of possession of drugs, with an additional charge of money laundering, was opened at Navalsig Police Station. The docket will be investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).”

The suspect is expected to appear in Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.

Dagga bust

Meanwhile, seven suspects were arrested during two intelligence‑driven Public Order Police operations in Ga‑Hlahla Village and Seshego in Limpopo on Saturday, 22 August 2026.

Police seized ammunition, dagga worth R150 000, illicit cigarettes, drugs, cash, and a Volkswagen Polo linked to the offences.

Three Eswatini nationals were detained for contravening immigration laws, while another suspect was charged with police interference.

Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Jan Petrus Scheepers praised the vigilance of officers.

“These successful operations demonstrate the importance of acting on credible information.”
