Thai woman gets second death sentence for cyanide poisoning

A serial poisoner earned another death sentence in Thailand.

On Tuesday, a Thai criminal court handed down a second death sentence to Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, colloquially known as “Aem Cyanide,” for poisoning Darinee Thepthawee in Nakhon Pathom province in December 2020.
Prosecutors alleged that Rangsiwuthaporn mixed potassium cyanide into food at a local market and knowingly served it to Thepthawee.
The 34-year-old victim’s elder sister told the court that Rangsiwuthaporn had texted the victim on Dec. 12 of that year, inviting her to a local market for some food. After Thepthawee returned home, she told her husband she felt sick, eventually having a seizure.
An autopsy later confirmed the poison led to the failure of the victim’s heart, lungs and liver, resulting in death.
The court found that Rangsiwuthaporn had been with the victim close to the time when the cyanide had taken effect on Dec 13.
Reports indicated that Rangsiwuthaporn owed Thepthawee approximately 60,000 baht ($2,533.48). Rangsiwuthaporn was unable to repay the debt, and the court ruled that she killed Thepthawee to clear the debt.
Online gambler turned killer
Rangsiwuthaporn was given her first death sentence back in November of 2024 for poisoning Siriporn Khanwong in April of 2023 after investigators found traces of cyanide in the victim’s body.
The two had met in Bangkok for a Buddhist ritual. As Khanwong was dying, reports say Rangsiwuthaporn drove away with the victim’s belongings and cash.
Police said the killer had an online gambling addiction and funded her habit by borrowing money from her victims, before killing them and stealing their jewelry and mobile phones.
In total, Rangsiwuthaporn was indicted for 15 murders. The cases are currently making their way through the court system.
