After scoring another pair of tallies on a two-run single in the fourth, Toledo pushed its lead to 7-0 with another two-run homer in the fifth.
The Saints countered at last in the bottom of the frame on a two-run scoring shot of their own off the bat of Tanner Schobel. Tristan Gray also came around to score as the ball sailed over the left center field wall.
Emmanuel Rodriguez followed Schobel’s path in the sixth with a solo blast in the same direction to pull St. Paul to within 7-3.
Unfortunately for the home side, they could pull no closer as Toledo finished off the contest with a two-run double in the eighth to seize the six-run, would-be final, advantage.
Saints starter Ricky Castro (3-3, 5.36 ERA) took the worst of the Mud Hens’ power surge, allowing five earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 3 1/3 innings. Castro’s ERA was 4.71 entering the evening.
St. Paul (73-55) and Toledo (60-68) are back at it Friday evening at CHS Field. The Saints send RHP Germán Márquez (1-1, 4.74) to the mound against Mud Hens LHP Jackson Wolf (6-11, 6.59). First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
