American Emma Navarro was greeted with a post-match cocktail of euphoria and relief Monday at the 2026 US Open. Simultaneously, France’s Loïs Boisson reached a breaking point — literally.

That contrast delivered utter cinema, or at least tennis’ newest meme.

As Navarro, the tournament’s No. 26 seed, took in a 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-3 win — emerging victorious from a first-round match that spanned three sets and two days — she pumped her fist.

The camera captured her expression, perhaps one of vindication after she was six points away from advancing in straight sets the night before until a rain delay rolled in. But that was the foreground of a now-iconic broadcast shot. The background featured the 23-year-old Boisson chopping wood.

She whacked her racket repeatedly against the Flushing Meadows hardcourt. It can be heard snapping, crackling and popping, an auxiliary sound to the symphony of cheers pouring down on Navarro.

The match ended with Boisson hitting the ball into the net and then promptly chucking her racket at the blue acrylic. Boisson met Navarro for a handshake, and they both shook the hand of the chair umpire.

And “action”: Moments later, the scene started, with Boisson grabbing another one of her rackets and beating it to a pulp. She eventually skipped it across the court before collecting her things and exiting, stage right.

Navarro, 25 and a 2024 US Open semifinalist, is 27th in the current WTA rankings. But Boisson, the world No. 237, broke her in what could have been a match-clinching game. Boisson then forced a tiebreaker that she dominated.

Navarro pulled out the third set to move on to the second round, where she’ll face fellow American Caty McNally on Wednesday.

“[When] I went home last night … I knew I had six points to win and everyone’s telling me get it done, finish it, you only gotta get six points,” Navarro said during her on-court interview. “I’m just proud of my toughness. It’s not easy being that close and losing a tough set.”

Navarro’s resilience will be remembered, as will the meme that was created in the wake of her triumph.
