South Africa scores another public holiday in 2026

Mark the next public holiday in 2026 in your calendar. South Africans must go to the polls again soon for local elections – 65 days from now – on Wednesday 4 November 2026. And government has to hand over a day off to make it happen. As gazetted by Cooperative Governance Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa, earlier this month, on 7 August 2026.

However, before you start planning that lie-in, remember what this extra public holiday in 2026 actually entails. IS THE IEC ACTUALLY READY?

With nationwide voter registration recently concluded, the Electoral Commission says it’s ready for the nation’s vote. It has reportedly rolled out a special training programme for voting station staff specifically targeting queue management. It says it learned a lot in 2024’s national elections, particularly when it comes to conflict de-escalation and voter dignity.

A major topic of concern previously was the treatment of the elderly who, despite preferential treatment, still had to wait for hours in queues. Nevertheless, the commission insists nearly 40 000 voter-management devices will be deployed nationally. And it promises less IT system failures.

Plus, in the Western Cape, officials have already reviewed historically high-volume voting stations. It has introduced dedicated queue-management systems to help cut waiting times at these venues. However, only time will tell if this actually translates into shorter lines on the day …

Furthermore, South Africa’s extra public holiday in 2026 brings our total tally for the year to 14. No matter what, the Public Holidays Act guarantees the nation 12 per year, which is the average globally. But in 2026, National Women’s Day fell on Sunday 9 August, triggering the Act’s built-in rollover to Monday 10 August. Add the one-off local election day on Wednesday 4 November, and you offset the loss of two usual days – Human Rights Day and the Day of Goodwill – that both landed on Saturdays this year.
