South Dakota Prep Media volleyball poll for Aug. 31: No. 1 Dell Rapids starts 6-0 in Class A

Aug. 31—MITCHELL — The second edition of the South Dakota Prep Media high school volleyball poll was issued on Monday, Aug. 31, with all three No. 1 teams remaining unchanged.

Here's a look at this week's rankings. Teams are listed with first place votes in parentheses, record, points and previous ranking. (Note: Due to the Labor Day holiday, next week's poll will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 8.)

1. Harrisburg (11), 2-0, 55; 2. O'Gorman, 1-0, 44; 3. Brandon Valley, 4-1, 32; 4. Sioux Falls Lincoln, 1-1, 21; 5. Watertown, 4-2, 7. Others receiving votes: Sioux Falls Washington (0-1) 5, Aberdeen Central (2-1) 1.

Arrows ranked: Watertown is the new No. 5 team in the rankings, replacing Sioux Falls Washington. The Arrows had wins over Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Jefferson during the week and then went 2-2 at the Huron Invitational to move into the top-five. The losses came to Class B No. 1 Chester and No. 3 Northwestern. The Warriors suffered a four-set loss to crosstown rival No. 4 Lincoln on Aug. 27.

1. Dell Rapids (9), 6-0, 53; 2. Sioux Falls Christian (2), 4-1, 45; 3. Dakota Valley, 1-0, 34; 4. Clark/Willow Lake, 2-0, 16; 5. St. Thomas More, 2-0, 9. Others receiving votes: Hamlin (2-0) 4, Vermillion (2-0) 2, Wagner (4-1) 1, Aberdeen Roncalli (2-0) 1.

Quarriers solid at No. 1: There were no changes in the top-five in Class A this week, with Dell Rapids starting the season at 6-0 thanks to sweeps of Elkton-Lake Benton and West Central, and then four wins at the Huron Invitational, all over Class AA competition with Sturgis, Spearfish, Mitchell and Brandon Valley. The No. 1 ranking will be put on the line on Thursday with No. 2 Sioux Falls Christian visiting Dell Rapids.

1. Chester (10), 5-1, 54; 2. Warner (1), 4-1, 43; 3. Northwestern, 4-2, 29; 4. Bennett County, 3-0, 13; 5. Colman-Egan, 2-0, 12. Others receiving votes: Harding County (1-0) 1, Gayville-Volin (3-0) 1.

Hawks move in: The only notable change in the Class B rankings was the addition of Colman-Egan from the receiving votes grouping last week, replacing Parkston, which fell to 2-3 after the first week of play. The top-three teams all took a loss on Saturday but none of them moved places, as No. 1 Chester lost to Brookings and No. 3 Northwestern lost to Brandon Valley at the Huron Invitational and No. 2 Warner was downed by Wagner at the Parkston Invitational.
