‘Super Silly,’ ‘Are the Rams Crazy?’ — Sean McVay Under Fire for Controversial Decision Ahead of Week 1 Australia Game vs. 49ers

The Los Angeles Rams are heading into Week 1 with a major challenge before they even take the field. Their first game of the season will be in Melbourne against the San Francisco 49ers, and preparing for the trip is almost as important as the matchup itself.

While both teams face the same massive journey, they have chosen very different ways to handle it. This difference has now turned Sean McVay’s travel plan into one of the most discussed parts of the season opener.

Sean McVay Defends Late Australia Arrival as Rams Face 49ers

Rams coach McVay confirmed Los Angeles will arrive in Melbourne only about 24 hours before Thursday’s game.

The 49ers, meanwhile, plan to get there roughly a week early to adjust to the 17-hour time difference. McVay’s reasoning comes from the Rams’ previous international experience, when the team traveled shortly before a London game, won, and returned home soon after.

The strategy has drawn criticism because Australia presents a much tougher travel challenge than a standard NFL road game. Fans on X have already questioned whether the Rams are taking an unnecessary gamble.

NFL reporter Benjamin Allbright questioned the decision, writing, “Super silly, especially with it being a season opener. Go. Get acclimated, leave immediately after.”

The concern is not simply the length of the flight.

Week 1 already brings limited preparation time due to roster cutdowns and subsequent adjustments, and the game will mark the first regular-season contest played in Australia. One fan summed up the uncertainty by asking, “As someone who’s made the trip to Australia, are the Rams crazy?”

Others pointed to what can happen when teams make similar choices. Andrew Gruttadaro cited Buffalo’s 2023 London trip, writing, “Bills did this for their London game in 2023. They played their worst game of the season, and multiple guys suffered career-altering injuries.”

Not everyone viewed the plan as simply reckless.

Analyst Davis Mattek defended the logic behind keeping the body on its normal schedule, writing, “This is what the literature says to do. Either keep your body on the exact same schedule or arrive early enough to fully acclimate.” His take suggests the Rams are following one accepted approach to managing a major time-zone change.

The unusual setup also prompted plenty of curiosity about how Los Angeles will manage its players during the flight.

Craig Horlbeck wrote, “This is the most interesting Week 1 storyline by a mile; the Rams have their own jet lag advanced analytics! Will they monitor players’ sleep habits on the plane? Will each player get their own pod? Did they consult sleep experts? Is this the first sleep battle in sports history?”

Injury expert Jesse Morse also framed the matchup as an unusual test, writing, “It will be interesting to see which approach, immediately before or about a week before, ends up being the most effective. Rams vs. 49ers in Australia, which is completely crazy BTW.”

The contrasting plans will become easier to judge once the teams meet at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sept. 10.

With the 49ers choosing early acclimation and the Rams betting on their established routine, McVay’s strategy is going to be interesting to watch as the NFL prepares for the first regular-season game in Australia.
