NBA Drops the Hammer on Clippers in Kawhi Leonard Investigation

The Los Angeles Clippers are facing one of the biggest punishments in NBA history after the league concluded its investigation into the franchise’s dealings involving Kawhi Leonard.
On Wednesday, the NBA announced that the Clippers violated the league’s salary-cap circumvention rules. The investigation, which was conducted by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, found what the league described as a pattern of misconduct surrounding Leonard and his off-court income opportunities.

The punishment is massive.
The Clippers have been ordered to forfeit five first-round draft picks, covering the 2029 through 2033 drafts, and have been fined $30 million. The organization will also be placed under NBA compliance monitoring for five years.
Clippers owner Steve Ballmer was suspended from all NBA and team activities for one year. President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension without pay, while president of business operations Gillian Zucker was suspended for one year without pay.
Leonard was also punished, although he avoided a suspension. The two-time NBA Finals MVP was fined $700,000 for his role in the matter.
At the center of the investigation was a $28 million endorsement agreement between Leonard and the now-bankrupt environmental company Aspiration. The NBA determined that the arrangement was part of a broader effort involving unauthorized financial benefits that violated league rules governing player compensation.
The Clippers, however, strongly disagree with the NBA’s findings.
The organization released a statement saying it “vehemently” rejects the conclusions of the investigation and believes the process was unfair. The Clippers are expected to challenge the penalties through arbitration.
The timing makes the situation even more complicated for the franchise. Los Angeles is already attempting to move into a new era after trading Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in a blockbuster deal that has been waiting for the investigation to conclude. That trade is now expected to move forward.
The Clippers will receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and significant draft compensation in the deal, but losing five additional first-round selections drastically changes the organization’s long-term outlook.
For years, Ballmer’s Clippers have been willing to spend aggressively in pursuit of a championship. Now, the franchise faces an enormous financial, organizational and draft-capital penalty stemming from the same Leonard era.
The NBA has made its message clear: salary-cap violations will come with serious consequences.
For the Clippers, the fallout from the Kawhi Leonard saga could affect the organization for years to come.
