‘Worst QB Decision in the History of the NFL’ — Radio Host Calls for Vikings To ‘Move On From’ J.J. McCarthy

After a tumultuous sophomore season for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, things have not improved heading into his third season.

The former first-round pick lost the starting quarterback competition to newcomer Kyler Murray and is rumored to have been demoted to third-string quarterback behind veteran Carson Wentz.
As a result, Fox Sports radio host Jason Smith had some harsh words for the Vikings regarding what they should do with McCarthy.
NFL Radio Host Has Bad News For Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy
Smith posted on X: “I really don’t know how J.J. McCarthy can be part of the Vikings Week 1. Today the GM couldn’t even say he’d be the backup. You just have to move on from him and blow past the daily reminder that you made the worst QB decision in the history of the NFL.”
Despite Smith’s words and encouragement to move on from the quarterback, Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley confirmed that he expects McCarthy to be on Minnesota’s roster in Week 1.
Teasley said of McCarthy’s role with the team, “J.J. McCarthy’s role is to continue to develop, to improve and to support his teammates. And he’s done an excellent job of that from the moment that I’ve been here and, from my understanding, since he walked through the door.”

While McCarthy is shaping up to be third on the Vikings depth chart, neither Kyler Murray nor Carson Wentz has a contract beyond this season. Meanwhile, McCarthy still has another year on his rookie contract plus a fifth-year option, which the team appears unlikely to exercise.
Teasley also spoke about McCarthy’s future with the team, adding: “He’s really talented. I think I said that from the jump. He was picked in the first round for a reason. Really good arm strength, underrated athlete, and looking forward to how he continues to develop in this system.

“I think the thing you need to keep in mind with J.J. is that he has the hardest job in sports. He’s only started 10 games, and his story’s not written.”
Last season, McCarthy struggled in those 10 starts as he threw 12 interceptions and only 11 touchdowns. While the Vikings went 6-4 in those 10 games, the team felt the need to upgrade at the position, which is why they brought in Kyler Murray.
Even though Teasley expects McCarthy on the team, it is important to note that he did not draft the quarterback. With McCarthy’s likely demotion to third-string quarterback, it does appear that the team would at least be willing to entertain trade offers.
However, simply moving on, as Smith suggested, does not appear to be on the cards right now.
