Franklin came to Virginia Tech after his midseason firing at Penn State less than a year after a trip to the College Football Playoff championship game. In a twist, Franklin brought back fired Hokies coach Brent Pry to run the defense while naming Penn State transfer Ethan Grunkemeyer the starting quarterback. Grunkemeyer took over for an injured Drew Allar for the second half of the season for the Nittany Lions, throwing for 1,339 yards and eight touchdowns.
VMI opened its first season under new coach Ashley Ingram with a 38-10 road loss at Idaho State last Saturday. The Keydets trailed 38-0 before getting some offense in the fourth quarter, with Chandler Wilson scoring on a 31-yard run. VMI ran for 229 yards, led by Wilson’s 62 on seven carries, while the defense gave up 366 yards through the air.
A once-bitter rivalry returns for the first time since 1984 with the Hokies leading the all-time series 49-25-5.
