Vrabel found himself roped into a scandal involving longtime NFL reporter Dianna Russini after the two were first spotted spending time together at a resort. More photos, even some dating back to 2020, then surfaced showing a long history of the two together.

Russini lost her job at The Athletic, while Vrabel's story changed before a decision to attend counseling in April. 

Here's a complete timeline of the Vrabel-Russini saga as the Patriots' season gets underway.

April 7: Photos show Vrabel, Russini holding hands at resort

Social media first became aware of the connection between Vrabel and Russini on April 7, when the New York Post's Page Six published photos of the two holding hands and hugging at an Arizona resort.

Vrabel and Russini, who are both married to other people, were said to have crossed paths at the resort in March, but they each denied that they were staying together.

The photos captured "a completely innocent interaction," Vrabel said, while Russini claimed she was at the resort as part of a group separate from the Patriots coach.

April 10: New York Times launches investigation into Russini

After initially brushing off the photos and accepting Russini's explanation, the New York Times, which owns The Athletic, announced on April 10 that it had launched an investigation into the matter.

"New details from the Page Six report and information from the investigation raised additional concerns that are now being reviewed further. The investigation is ongoing," the New York Post reported.

April 14: Russini resigns from The Athletic

Russini released a lengthy letter announcing her resignation from The Athletic on April 14, a week after the photos were first published. 

The longtime reporter did not admit to a relationship with Vrabel or walk back her initial defense, instead explaining that her contract was already set to expire and adding that she did not want the growing story to "define" her career.

Russini referenced a "narrative that has been constructed" about her and Vrabel, continuing to insist that their interaction in Arizona was coincidental and innocent.

April 21: Vrabel breaks silence on saga

In a press conference on April 21, Vrabel spoke openly about the Russini situation for the first time. While Vrabel didn't admit to a relationship with Russini, he said he had "difficult conversations" with his family, as well as with the Patriots.

"We believe, in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me," Vrabel told reporters. "We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction. Those are comments and questions that I've answered for the team and with the team and we'll keep those private and to ourselves."

April 22: Page Six releases more Vrabel, Russini photos

More than a week after Russini resigned from The Athletic, the trickle of photos continued with images showing Vrabel and Russini having breakfast together at the Arizona resort.

Page Six, which released the photos, claimed that "multiple eyewitnesses" confirmed the two were dining alone, despite Russini's insistence that she was part of a group.

April 22: Vrabel reportedly plans to seek counseling

Late on the eve of the NFL Draft, Vrabel announced that he was seeking counseling that would force him to miss the final day of the draft.

"As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them. In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend," Vrabel said, explaining that he needed to focus on being "the best husband, father and coach that I can possibly be."

April 23: TMZ publishes photos of Vrabel, Russini kissing at NYC bar in 2020

Vrabel breaking his silence didn't end the trickle of new photos, which continued on NFL Draft day with TMZ releasing photos showing him and Russini alone at a New York City bar together in March of 2020, in the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vrabel, who was the head coach of the Titans at the time, was seen kissing Russini in one image, which totally transformed the saga. Not only did it seemingly confirm Vrabel and Russini were more than friends at one point, but it hinted that the uncomfortably close connection between the two went back at least six years.

Despite Vrabel seemingly putting the matter to rest on his end with his comments earlier in the week, the new photos raised questions about his future with the Patriots.

April 23: Vrabel holds press conference to address saga

Hours after the new photos were leaked to TMZ, Vrabel gathered Patriots media members for an impromptu press conference just before the start of the NFL Draft.

While some speculated Vrabel could announce a leave of absence or even his resignation, his comments sounded much like the words he had shared two days earlier.

"My previous actions don't meet the standard that I hold myself to," Vrabel said, vowing to find a better balance between football and family. The Patriots coach reiterated that he planned to attend counseling and vowed to miss more time going forward if it meant prioritizing his family.

May 6: TMZ claims Vrabel, Russini rented boat together in 2021

While the saga quieted down as April turned to May, TMZ reported in early May that Vrabel and Russini had rented a private boat together while Russini was pregnant in 2021.

The outlet later released video of the two on a dock together around the time they rented the boat, as well as a photo of Vrabel with staff members from the boat rental company.
