Mets jump on Marlins' Alcantara early, hold on for 7-5 victory

Sean Manaea flirted with perfection before allowing five consecutive hits and being pulled in the sixth inning.
But the Mets’ offense did enough in the early innings to secure a series win in Miami.

The Mets won, 7-4, with the offense starting the night hitting three home runs off Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara.
Francisco Lindor’s leadoff homer gave the Mets the early lead before Juan Soto’s three-run homer and Brett Baty’s solo shot in the second and third innings, respectively, contributed to a 6-0 cushion at loanDepot Park.
Jared Young’s RBI single also was charged to Alcantara, who experienced an opposite start than the Mets’ lefty starter.
Manaea was perfect through the first five innings, totaling just 52 pitches and cruising through Miami’s lineup.
Then he failed to record an out in the sixth.
Jakob Marsee, the Marlins’ No. 7 hitter, broke up the perfect game with a bloop single before advancing to second on Baty’s throwing error. Manaea allowed four more hits before being pulled for reliever Jonathan Pintaro.
Manaea was charged with his fourth run after Marlins third baseman Javier Sanoja hit an RBI single off Pintaro, making it a 7-4 game.
In the end, Manaea totaled five hits, four earned runs, four strikeouts and no walks in 5 innings of work. He threw 61 pitches (45 strikes) and his ERA reached 4.79.
Alcantara’s stat line looked much worse: seven hits, seven earned runs, four walks and one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Pintaro, Nate Lavender and Dedniel Nunez combined for no earned runs in three innings before setting Kodai Senga up for a save opportunity.
Senga allowed a run on Marsee’s RBI double before throwing 10 consecutive forkballs to secure save No. 7 of the season.
The Mets will go for the sweep in Wednesday evening’s series finale.
