Carson Wentz began Sunday as the Minnesota Vikings’ insurance policy. He ended it as the quarterback responsible for one of Week 1’s biggest comeback victories.

Wentz replaced Kyler Murray after the Vikings starter suffered a concussion during the first quarter against the Green Bay Packers. Instead of merely keeping Minnesota competitive, the veteran threw three touchdown passes as the Vikings scored 29 unanswered points in a 39-22 victory.

The performance immediately validated Minnesota’s controversial decision to make Wentz its No. 2 quarterback ahead of former first-round pick JJ McCarthy. That depth-chart move suddenly looks much easier to explain.

Kyler Murray injury changes everything

Murray’s Vikings debut ended after he was hit while sliding short of the first-down marker. His helmet came off during the play, and Packers safety Javon Bullard received a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. Murray eventually walked to the locker room without assistance but was ruled out with a concussion. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said after the game that Murray would be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

The uncertainty surrounding Murray will make Wentz one of the NFL’s most closely watched players entering Week 2.

Minnesota brought Murray in to lead an offense featuring Justin Jefferson and a talented group of playmakers. Any extended absence would force the Vikings to adjust their plans almost immediately. Wentz showed Sunday that they might not have to dramatically reduce the offense.

Vikings’ backup decision pays off immediately

Choosing Wentz over McCarthy generated understandable questions. McCarthy entered the league as a first-round selection and once appeared to be Minnesota’s long-term answer. Moving him behind a veteran on the depth chart suggested the coaching staff valued Wentz’s experience and readiness more than McCarthy’s developmental upside.

Week 1 offered strong evidence for that decision. Wentz entered an emotional divisional game without the benefit of a full week preparing as the starter. He helped Minnesota turn an early injury scare into a convincing victory while delivering the ball to the team’s established playmakers.

One game does not erase the inconsistency that has followed Wentz during his NFL career. It does, however, prove that he can still provide meaningful production when placed in the right situation. Minnesota’s immediate priority will be Murray’s health. There should be no rush to return him before he clears every stage of the concussion protocol.

If Wentz has to start, the Vikings can now make that move with considerably more confidence.
