Former Bayern Munich striker in line for new head coaching gig?

Sandro Wagner could be in line for another head-coaching opportunity, with the former Bayern Munich striker reportedly emerging as the leading candidate to take over at Hannover 96.
Hannover dismissed Christian Titz with immediate effect after a disappointing start to the 2. Bundesliga season. According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Wagner is the club’s top target and negotiations are already underway. However, there is no agreement yet, meaning Wagner will not take charge of training immediately.

The potential move would represent an interesting next chapter for Wagner, who has been looking for another opportunity since leaving FC Augsburg last December. The 38-year-old has experience both as a head coach and at the highest level of the German game, having also worked as an assistant with the German national team alongside Julian Nagelsmann.
His most recent head-coaching experience, however, was a difficult one.
Wagner took over at Augsburg ahead of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season after building a strong reputation during his time at SpVgg Unterhaching and with the Germany setup. His Augsburg tenure began with an impressive 3-1 victory over Freiburg, but things deteriorated quickly. He managed just seven additional points from his next 11 Bundesliga matches and was dismissed after a 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim. Augsburg ultimately ended the season ninth after improving significantly under Manuel Baum.
That spell will inevitably hang over Wagner as he considers his next job. Hannover, meanwhile, would be giving him an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in the 2. Bundesliga while taking charge of a club with ambitions of returning to the top flight.
For Wagner, this could be a chance to demonstrate that Augsburg was a setback rather than an indication of his ceiling as a coach. His previous work at Unterhaching showed his ability to develop a team and earn promotion, while his time with Germany exposed him to an entirely different level of football.
Nothing is finalized yet, but Hannover could provide Wagner with exactly what he needs: another opportunity to prove that he belongs on the touchline.
