Michigan State football, especially new head coach Pat Fitzgerald, aren't looking for moral victories. They have made that exceedingly clear. However, it's hard to leave a 17-point loss feeling much better about a rebuilding team than you'd feel about the Spartans on Saturday night. Notre Dame was a 29.5-point favorite over Michigan State, but had to scrap and fight to win by 17, and MSU will definitely be leaving that game feeling like they had a real chance to win and I'm sure the rematch next year will be circled on their schedules.
After the game, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was interviewed on the field for the television audience, and he was complimentary of this new era of Michigan State, noting that he feels they are physical and disciplined, and that he felt a 17-point win was a great marker for his team:
