NFL Hot Seat Watch Week 2: Buccaneers’ Todd Bowles, Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh, Lions’ Dan Campbell Among Coaches on Notice

So early into the NFL season, we are already seeing some head coaches’ seats around the league get hot. It’s way too early for actual changes, but those conversations are beginning, and Week 2 gave us more proof of where these coaches stand.
Here are some of those coaches who may be on the hot seat going into Week 3.

Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Entering the 2026 season, Todd Bowles was already on the hot seat, and this was a year to prove himself to the higher-ups in Tampa Bay. After losing Week 1 to the Cincinnati Bengals, that seat didn’t cool down, especially with the mistakes in that game. But Week 2 was something else.
Against the Cleveland Browns, it was a must-win. Cleveland was coming off a league-worst overall ranking in PFN’s Team Impact Metric, and they didn’t look like a team that could turn it around. Still, the Buccaneers lost, and their defense now ranks 15th in the league on PFN’s Defense Impact Metric.
After a long weather delay, Tampa Bay couldn’t get down the field and score, marking their second loss of the season and dropping to 0-2. This may have been the worst loss in the Bowles era.

Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers
Speaking of horrible starts to the season, the Los Angeles Chargers have been unable to get things going, and it’s been against teams that many expected to be the worst in the NFL. In Week 1, they lost to the Arizona Cardinals 26-14, then in Week 2, fell to the Las Vegas Raiders with an identical score of 26-14.
For a team that should be fighting for a playoff spot, this start is unacceptable, and it’s not like the season is going to get easier. The Chargers’ next three games are the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, and Denver Broncos. If they fail to turn around their season quickly, questions will be asked about Jim Harbaugh’s future.

Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions
In Week 1, the Detroit Lions blew a historic lead against the New Orleans Saints, and the Lions were a successful Saints two-point conversion away from losing that game. This wasn’t a horrible close win, but it shouldn’t have been close to begin with.
Then, in Week 2, the Lions faced the Bills, and for a good amount of this game, they were behind big. Josh Allen and the rest of the offense completely carved Detroit’s defense apart, and although personnel was a big part of that, the coaching was not good enough.
Since losing Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson as his coordinators, Dan Campbell hasn’t looked the same, and many aren’t sold on his ability to turn the team around.

Dan Quinn, Washington Commanders
Besides maybe Bowles, the next most likely head coach to be fired is Dan Quinn. The Washington Commanders are 0-2, have made mistakes throughout these games, and now Jayden Daniels is out with another dislocated elbow.
The season isn’t bright for Washington, and although Daniels being out could be used as an excuse to keep Quinn, it’s likely to end with him being fired.
Aaron Glenn, New York Jets
The New York Jets won their first game of the season against the struggling Tennessee Titans, but they couldn’t get the win in Week 2. Although the Jets were competitive all game against the Green Bay Packers, what happened at the end may have heated up HC Aaron Glenn’s seat.
With timeouts, the Jets could have stopped the clock and had a chance to score before overtime, but they let the clock run out. Then, after winning the coin toss, they chose to get the ball first. These two confusing decisions hurt the Jets in the end, and although neither was a sure thing, they were worrying. As a result, Glenn, despite a great Week 1 win, will again feel the pressure about his future in New York.
