Court ruling restores eligibility for Indiana football's Stephen Daley, Kellan Wyatt

BLOOMINGTON — Monroe County Circuit Court judge Kara Krothe issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA on Wednesday in the eligibility case involving 97 student-athletes, including Indiana football defenders Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt, per court records.
The ruling opens the door for Daley and Wyatt to play on Friday night against Northwestern. They had to sit out a 38-0 win over Western Kentucky as they awaited a ruling.

Going into the 2026-27 academic year, the NCAA eliminated the traditional redshirt rule and various hardship waivers in favor of an age-based eligibility framework. The new “five-for-five” guidelines allow athletes to play five seasons in five calendar years, but the rule excluded athletes from the 2022 high school class, even if they fit the criteria for an additional year.
Indiana swimmer Owen McDonald, volleyball player Avry Tatum and men's basketball player Sam Alexis are also plaintiffs in the case.
Alexis was among the 89 additional athletes added to the complaint during a court hearing Monday as part of an agreement made between the attorneys representing the NCAA and student-athletes. The center has since withdrawn from the separate eligibility lawsuit he was part of in Tennessee.
Indiana's five athletes involved in the case each testified earlier this week about how they would be impacted if the court didn't intervene.
The NCAA is expected to appeal Krothe's decision.
