Rooney gives Carrick ‘nasty’ advice as he reveals ‘horrible’ Ferguson, Mourinho & Guardiola common trait

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney urges Michael Carrick to start showing his edgier side before it’s too late.
The former midfielder became United’s permanent manager at the end of last season after guiding the team back in the right direction in the aftermath of Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January.

However, Carrick now finds himself in hot water after a poor start to the new campaign. Man Utd have only gathered five points from as many Premier League games, and have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

While INEOS aren’t ready to give up on Carrick just yet, some sources claim the next few weeks could be decisive, and that if the results don’t improve before the November international break, a sacking could be inevitable.
From Day One, Rooney has been one of Carrick’s staunchest supporters. The iconic striker is a former teammate of the under-fire manager, and the two remain good friends.
Therefore, Rooney offered the 45-year-old brotherly advice, telling him to become more ruthless to follow in the footsteps of the most successful managers of our lifetime.
“He needs to be an a*****e. All the best managers are a******s. The best managers are nasty; they’re selfish,” said the former Everton and Man Utd star during his appearance on Stick to United.
“Alex Ferguson, nasty. Really nice around the place, got that feeling. But on the big decisions, he was nasty, he was selfish. He was a gambler; he’d make big decisions. Probably weren’t sure whether were to pay off or not, but he took that chance.
“Mourinho, nasty. You see Guardiola. He gets rid of players. He doesn’t care, because at the end of the day, it’s you who’s going to suffer as a manager.”
Can Carrick heed the advice?

In the summer of 2025, Amorim raised eyebrows by casting aside five players in the shape of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia, prohibiting them from training with the main host.
While the means were uncouth, the decision certainly paid off, with four of the aforementioned players finding new clubs before the deadline, thus saving the club important figures and opening up space for new arrivals.
On the other hand, Carrick adopted a much warmer approach, with no players pushed out of Carrington, not even Joshua Zirkzee, a forward that the manager doesn’t fully trust and needed to leave to make room for a more useful replacement.
We’re citing all this just to highlight how Carrick’s good manners and nature can be counter-productive at times.
Therefore, Rooney is surely making a valid point, but whether the MUFC boss is capable of evoking a more cerebral version of himself, or even willing to try, remains doubtful.
