The situation between the Pittsburgh Steelers and defensive back Joey Porter Jr. remains a tricky one, with no resolution to the issue in sight.

But at least Porter Jr. has popped up to practice on Wednesday, albeit on a limited role, as the Steelers prepare for a Week 3 showdown against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Interestingly, Porter has a “non-injury/ conditioning” label on the injury report, which must sound familiar to those keeping tabs on him this season.

“If you’re keeping track at home, he was ‘non-injury/ conditioning’ last Wednesday. Left practice Thursday after reporting a flare up of his back. DNP Friday,” Mike DeFabo of The Athletic shared via a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).
In other words, there isn’t a heightened level of confidence in Porter’s chances to see action in the Bengals game this coming Sunday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. In the backdrop of all this is the apparent hold-in by Porter, who is looking for the Steelers to give in to his desire for a big payday.
With the Bengals coming to town, the Steelers would love to have someone like Porter help Pittsburgh’s defense against the high-powerd Cincinnati passing attack. Cincinnati, which is 2-0, is 10th in the league through two weeks in the 2026 NFL season with 213.5 passing yards per game. Converesely, Pittsburgh is third with just 154.5 passing yards allowed per contest despite Porter’s absence on the field.
A second-round pick by the Steelers in the 2023 NFL Draft, the 26-year-old Porter has three interceptions and 31 passes defended, so far as a pro.
