Penguins Make 7 Cuts, Re-Assign Rucks to WHL

The Pittsburgh Penguins don’t have any more time to evaluate talent, and the get-to-know-you phase with their top two draft picks has ended.

Friday morning, the Penguins cut Avery Hayes, Tanner Hower, Atley Calvert, and Mikhail Ilyin from training camp and reassigned them to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Hayes, 23, played a gritty game against the Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday night. The others performed well, too. However, the team’s final preseason game is Saturday, and final rosters are due by Monday.
In addition to the players sent to WBS, the Penguins also reassigned Liam Ruck, their 2026 first-round pick (22nd overall), and their second-round pick Markus Ruck (39th overall) to the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL.
Oliver Okuliar, who was injured in the team’s first preseason game, has been designated as an injured non-roster and will continue his rehabilitation process in WBS.
