Giants offense held in check as Tarik Skubal dominates in L.A. win

Yunior Marte and his bizarro reverse splits gave those up to Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages, right-handed hitters, in the second, but he was otherwise good in the San Francisco Giants' 2-0 loss to Los Angeles at Oracle Park, working five innings and keeping himself on the radar for a big-league job next year.
Scott Bandura, the rookie left fielder, comes in for credit, too, throwing out baserunners trying to stretch singles into doubles in both the second and third innings. And the Giants' bullpen was outstanding, with Sam Hentges, Joel Kuhnel, Dylan Smith and Tristan Beck each providing a scoreless inning. One thing the pitching could especially hang its hat on: San Francisco held Shohei Ohtani hitless and he struck out three times.
Skubal was outstanding, though, and he was facing a collection of rookies, trade acquisitions, waiver claims and Christian Koss in his seven innings of work. Los Angeles has won each of Skubal's last seven starts.
The Giants had three hits off him and did little with them - Victor Bericoto was thrown out going for two in the first, and after Bandura's one-out single in the third, Koss inexplicably bunted down the first-base line and was out for the second game in a row in an attempt to reach putting a bunt down that direction. Bo Davidson also singled in the seventh.
While there are always plenty of Los Angeles fans at Oracle Park for this series, the sold-out stadium appeared to be close to 50 percent Dodgers fans Friday, especially in the lower level. That's a particularly ouchy development during the Giants' Fan Appreciation weekend.
Los Angeles is already comfortably in the postseason and even has a first-round bye, but the Giants could prevent the Dodgers from winning 100 games by taking one of the final two games.
