Giles represented the franchise for over half a century. He served in multiple positions at the organization since he started in 1969, including vice president, business operations, and was promoted to executive vice president three years later.
In 1981, he organized a group that purchased the club from the Carpenter family. He served as president and CEO until 1997, then became chairman. He shifted to chairman emeritus in 2015, a title he held at the time of his death. Philadelphia made statements on the news through John Middleton and Mike Schmidt, paying tribute to his memory.

“Bill helped to reshape our franchise from a traditional baseball club into a highly visible entertainment and business operation,” said Middleton, Phillies managing partner and CEO. “His profound impact in overseeing one of the greatest eras in franchise history, both on and off the field, will forever be his legacy.”
“Bill was the heart and soul of the organization for over two decades,” said Schmidt, Hall of Famer and former Phillies third baseman. “He was a close personal friend to so many of us. He will always be a big part of Phillies history.”

What lies ahead for Phillies amid Bill Giles news
Philadelphia had just four winning seasons during Bill Giles’ time as CEO but went to the World Series in two of them. Giles also played a major role in building the Phillies team that won the World Series in 1980, including persuading former owner Ruly Carpenter to sign free agent Pete Rose.
The Phillies paid tribute to Giles before their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. However, Philadelphia couldn’t end the night with a win, falling 2-0 to the Rays. They were unable to get a run on the board, conceding the lone runs in the first two innings of the game.
Philadelphia fell to an 87-73 record on the season, sitting at second place in the NL East Division standings. They will look to bounce back in Game 2 of their series against the Rays. That matchup commences on Sept. 26 at 7:15 p.m. ET.
