Broncos Edge Rams, 30-26, As Hufanga Denies LA At Goal Line

The Denver Broncos got off to another slow start against the Los Angeles Rams, but they rode a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and two interceptions from safety Talanoa Hufanga to get a 30-26 win.

The first half was all Rams, however. LA dominated offensively, as they possessed the ball and moved it steadily while the Broncos did almost nothing. LA scored the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter after an 11-play, 63-yard drive that quarterback Matthew Stafford finished off with a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Higbee.
That made it 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, and the Rams shifted to the field-goal game in the second. LA fronted three field-goal drives in the quarter, with the drive yardages checking in at 49 yards, then 63 and finally 54 as kicker Harrison Mavis nailed three three-pointers. That made it 16-0 at the half, with the Broncos submitting two more sleepy quarters in an early season that’s been full of them.
The Broncos offense finally showed up in the third quarter, as they got the short passing game going and capitalized on some good field position to complete a 42-yard, 12-play drive that finished with a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bo Nix to receiver Pat Bryant. Nix followed up with a two-point conversion throw to Jaylen Waddle as the Broncos cut the lead in half at 16-8.
That woke the Broncos up all the way, and they took advantage of a Rams penalty on special teams to get more good field position and complete another touchdown drive. The finishing strike was from Nix to tight end Nate Adkins from eight yards out, and a two-point strike to Bryant tied the game at 16-16.
That made the fourth quarter a brand new ballgame, and that was when a track meet broke out. LA scored first after a Nix interception, as Mavis cashed in after a short drive with a 48-yard field goal.
That put LA up 19-16, but Hufanga played hero after a Denver three-and-out with a 60-yard pick six off Stafford to make it 23-19. But Stafford struck back with a lightning drive and a 48-yard TD strike to Konata Mumpfield to put LA back in front at 26-23.
More nail biting followed as Nix led Denver down the field, with the finisher being a Nix sneak as he hoisted ball over the goal line to put the Broncos ahead 30-23.
But Stafford wasn’t done by a long shot. He led LA down the field one last time with 47 seconds left, and the game came down to a single play from the edge of the Broncos red zone with two seconds left. Hufanga picked the ball off a yard into the end zone, and the Broncos had a win that was very reminiscent of one of last year’s thrillers to up their record to 2-1.
