She got just what she expected.
Every point for a battle as Newman’s New Boston Huron volleyball team earned a 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 over Airport on Monday, Sept. 28.
“Knowing both teams entered the season in similar situations after graduating several key seniors from last year’s squads, the Chiefs anticipated a competitive match and were ready for the challenge,” Newman said. “The win provides a valuable boost in confidence for a young Huron team that continues to develop and improve each week.”
Huron, which starts three freshmen, showed poise in the close contest.
Newman praised the work of her defense and Ava Russo, Brooke Simone and Addison McFadden at the net.
“This was a big win for us,” said Newman said. “Our defense looked good tonight and kept us in the game. We’re happy with where things are headed and excited to continue growing as a team.”

Flat Rock sweeps
FLAT ROCK – Sarah Giroux (14 kills, 10 digs, 3aces), Lily Klein 7 kills, 4 aces) and Taylor Hesse (5 kills) led Flat Rock to a three-set win over Grosse Ile Monday.
SMCC heats up
MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central pulled out a tough first set then cruised past Jefferson 25-21, 25-6, 25-7 Monday.
Sweep for Milan
RIVERVIEW – Milan got off to a fast start in the opening set and dispatched Riverview 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 Monday.
Salenbien leads Summerfield
PETERSBURG – Bridget Salenbien led Summerfield in both Kills (10) and digs (13) while hitting .321 in a 25-9, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Toledo Central Catholic Monday.
The Bulldogs served led led by Hailey Hunter (23 points, 9 aces) and Raya Horak (18 points, 8 aces).

Zappaterra lifts Flat Rock
FLAT ROCK – Flavio Zappaterra netted both goals as Flat Rock nipped Jefferson-Erie Mason in the opening round of the Huron League round robin Monday.
Assists were recorded by Mac Mlotha and Cyrus Rollins.
“The boys held tough and played hard until the end,” Flat Rock coach Sean Sturgeon said.
Sawyer Schaffer scored on a penalty kick and Jonah Busen was strong in net for 3-8 Jefferson-Mason.
Fowkes pours in four
MONROE – Aaron Fowkes scored four times and Carson Welker added two goals and two assists in a 7-2 win over Airport in the opening round of the Huron League round robin Monday.
Spencer Schumate notched the other goal and Dominic Imbrogno, Calloway Gossiaux, Joel Hendrick, and Jeffery Gessner picked up assists.
“It was a great team win,” SMCC coach Jon Pederson said. “We moved the ball well and played to our strengths. Joel Hendrick and Carson Peters played very well defensively.”
Huron avenges loss
NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron avenged an earlier loss by beating Milan 4-0 in the opening round of the Huron League round robin Monday.
Gragg, Cogan lead Ida
HILLSDALE – Gavin Gragg and Cameron Cogan scored two goals apiece in an 8-0 victory over Hillsdale Monday.
Riley Cole, Garrett Baxter, Rocco Rowe, and Connor Watterworth had the other goals and assists went to Watterworth, Cogan, Weston Allen, Stevie Riley, Dane Holycross, and Ryan Buuck.
Carter Pugh, who was called up from the junior varsity team, recorded the shutout.
“We came out with good intensity and scored three goals in three minutes,” Ida coach Tim Allen said.
Jones scores three
NEWPORT – Cooper Jones scored three goals to lead Jefferson-Erie Mason to a 4-3 victory over Summit Academy Friday.
Leeland Swann added a goal and an assist, freshman Ethan Sieb made 17 saves including a penalty kick in his first varsity start and Brady Hawks led the defense for the 3-7 Bears.
State Line bounces back
TEMPERANCE – State Line Christian ended a two-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Bowling Green Christian.
Trey Heaton scored off an assist from Brit Yglesias. Sophomore Stevie Callejas was strong in goal.
The 9-4 Patriots fell 3-2 Friday to Cleveland Heritage Christian despite goals by Heaton and Garrett Powell.
It was the first goal of the season for the sophomore Powell.
GIRLS GOLF
Aaron third in SEC Red
MONROE – Monroe’s Askken Aaron finished with a round 84 at Sandy Creek Golf Course to finish behind Ann Arbor Skyline teammates Suriya Ailawadi and Olivia Housler, who both shot 79, in the Southeastern Conference Red meet.
Gracie Gottschalk of Monroe was fifth with 90 as the Trojans wound up third in the team standings with 390.
Ragan Oscar placed 12th and Madison Rutkowski 19th for seventh-place Bedford.
Carlson captures title
GIBRALTAR – Juliana Guzman was the medalist with 45 as Gibraltar Carlson won a Downriver League jamboree at Lake Erie Metropark Monday.The Marauders shot 205 with Stella Eaton and Ellie Frisch both checking in at 53 and Lillian Maynard at 54.
Tolliver, Piepsney lead
MONROE – Lauren Tolliver (42) and Olivia Piepsney (45) had the two lowest scores of the day as St. Mary Catholic Central beat Riverview 191-219 at Monroe Golf & Country Club Monday.
Huron turns back Rams
NEW BOSTON – Flat Rock’s Elyse Rogier took medalist honors with 49, but New Boston Huron had the next four best scores to earn a 214-225 victory at Willow Metropark Monday.Trinity Fabrizio (50), Ava Bossick (54), Olyvia Taylor (54) and Lilly Trevorrow (56) led Huron.
Johnson, Hall lead Ida
SALINE – Jessica Johnson and Makenna Hall of Ida finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in a Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree at Rustic Glen Monday.
Teammate Addison Schieb took 10th as the Blue Streaks wound up third in the team standings with 203. Hudson won the meet with 185.
Emch leads Whiteford
OTTAWA LAKE – Addyson Emch shot 56 for the second-lowest score of the day, but Whiteford fell 228-244 at Whiteford Valley Golf Club Monday..
CROSS COUNTRY
Trinity grabs three titles
MONROE – Amelia Murphy (girls 7-8), Evie Hunter (girls K-6) and Wesley Barron (boys elementary) of Trinity Lutheran were champions in the Jefferson Invitational Saturday at Sterling State Park.
Also winning medals for Trinity were Lainey Hess, Marie Nieman, Oliver Pennell, Jacob Petre, Evan Dowen and Jacob Baron.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Ruddy picked for award
HILLSDALE – Whiteford graduate Shea Ruddy, a senior for the Hillsdale College football team, has been named to the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
He is one of 22 honorees from Football Bowl Subdivision schools for community service, academics and athletics.
He is the second Hillsdale player to receive the honor and the first since 2008.
HUNTING
Hoffman bags deer
WEST BRANCH – Emory Hoffman of Monroe County recently was successful during the youth deer hunt in Michigan.
He was hunting with his father, Richard Hoffman Jr., 44, and grandfather Richard Hoffman Sr., 69.
