Notes
It’s getting desperate for the Flyers. Still searching for their first win, the Flyers’ Saturday contest kicks off a tough stretch of 5 games, bookended by the Hurricanes and then the Lightning, Senators, and Bruins in between. Starting the season strong is always an important aspect of the NHL season. The Flyers have a tough battle to avoid digging themselves a hole.
Part of the effort to avoid that hole, it looks like Rick Tocchet has shaken up the lines a little bit, trying to find some juice. The new “top line” is Travis Koncency, Christian Dvorak, and Matvei Michkov. The three played the 3rd preseason together and looked damn good. It was Michkov’s best preseason game by far. Dvorak popped on the eye test, and the chemistry that Konecny had with Michkov looked incredible. That will be a line to watch.
It also looks as if David Jiricek will make his season debut for the Flyers on Saturday. The 22-year-old defenseman is now on his 3rd team since being drafted in 2022 and will look to make strides and find his spot in the league. Jiricek could make a big impact on the power play, which has struggled once again this season. Cam York took PP2 reps at morning skate on Saturday, but it’d be hard to imagine Jiricek not out there where he is needed most.
Riding the hot hand? Joseph Woll will make his second consecutive start for the Flyers on Saturday after a fantastic 41-save night against the New Jersey Devils, where he was able to steal a point for the Flyers, basically single-handedly. He’ll get the nod on Saturday against Carolina.
This will also be the return of the 2026 Stanley Cup Champs after eliminating the Flyers from the playoffs in 4 games last season. Nicolas Deslauriers returns to Philly, as well as South Jersey native Eric Robinson.
