A high school football game between undefeated South and host Briggs that was suspended because of multiple fights will resume at 5 p.m. Oct. 5, Briggs coach Harold Bates told The Dispatch.

The game began Oct. 2 and was called late in the third quarter with South leading 12-7.

Ohio High School Athletic Association rules typically dictate that when a game is halted, the score at the time becomes final.

But Bates told The Dispatch that play will continue in what he called a “closed game. Coaches, players, administrators only.”

South is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the City League-South.

It was not immediately clear to The Dispatch how the fights began, although some social media posts said they were instigated by South players. The Dispatch was not present at the game.

OHSAA director of media relations Tim Stried had not returned a text message from The Dispatch seeking further clarification as of late afternoon Oct. 3.

One other game Oct. 2, between Akron Buchtel and Akron Firestone, was called at halftime with Buchtel leading 20-0 because of multiple fights involving spectators inside and outside the stadium. No players or coaches were involved.

South’s turnaround from an 0-10 record in 2024 has been one of the prominent storylines in City League football this fall. The Bulldogs are one of three undefeated teams in the City League, along with Linden-McKinley and West, and were tied for ninth in this week’s Division III, Region 11 computer rankings.

South hosts Africentric on Oct. 9 before a showdown with West on Oct. 16.

Any players ejected for fighting could be suspended for up to two weeks pursuant to OHSAA rules, but that can reduced at the discretion of the organization.

South hosts Africentric on Oct. 9 before playing West.
