Jim Harbaugh not firing Mike McDaniel, remains lone person hopeful about Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers aren't a good team right now. The good or bad news, depending on your opinion of resident offensive coordinators, is that there will be no changes as pertains to Mike McDaniel.

That's the word from head coach Jim Harbaugh, who Saturday had to deal with another loss on the season and yet another moment of doubt placed on this team and its offense.
"His job is not in jeopardy," Harbaugh said of McDaniel, following the Chargers' 30-23 loss Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks. "He's a skilled coach, and we're going to keep growing."
Los Angeles falls to 0-4 on the season, in a division quickly falling into the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders. It's a long season, but it feels even longer when you consider how out of sync this Chargers squad has been.
Quarterback Justin Herbert spent some of his day again throwing the ball into the hands of the opposing team, finishing Sunday with two interceptions and one touchdown on 19-for-31 passing for 189 yards.
At the very least, Herbert didn't take long to stifle any notions of an offensive surge, tempering expectations immediately on Sunday with a pick thrown to Seattle's Drake Thomas less than a minute into the game.
Chargers' offensive struggles under Mike McDaniel
Mike McDaniel's creative and oftentimes complex strategy isn't exactly hitting on any cylinders at the start of the season.
The stats don't lend much in the way of celebration four games in: 16.8 points per game (No. 29), 185.3 passing yards/game (No. 24), 38 offensive penalties (No. 4) and fifth in the league in percentage of drives ending in an offensive turnover (19.1).
There is little respite as L.A. next welcomes division rival the Denver Broncos to SoFi this coming week.
For his part, Harbaugh sounds hopeful.
"The plan did not work to result in a victory, and we'll go back and plan some more with the skilled coaches we have and the talented players and fight," Harbaugh said on Sunday. "That's what gives me optimism."
That gives us at least one person in Los Angeles who is optimistic about the Chargers.
